I also imagine that some people may have difficulty with some encoding programs, because as far as I know the majority of them (Virtualdub, XviD, x264, MP4box, AVISynth, LAME etc as far as Windows is concerned) are written in English only. I know how frustrating that can be from times I've tried to use Winny before. It's great that the guide was a help, and I appreciate you translating it (I hope most of what I said made sense!). famous / notorious and largest Forum's Forum in Japan. seems little bit
unique in other nations. Contrary to AnimeMusicVideos.org, Doom9, and some others, 2ch does not have it's own thema. organizer says "from hacking to cooking", it has almost all kind of Forums. 2ch has directory like yahoo (Forum name / thread), for instance I found link to the guide in "DTV(DeskTop Video) / x264 rev7". All forums are under complete Anonymous system, most of people do not use even "pointer" such as "Zero 1", or "Ageha" (and I'm Anonymous too). So sometimes this cause social controverse. for instance, I think "Winny" could not be developed without 2ch. It was a big progress in japanese P2P technology, but also enhanced piracy and security problem. 2ch is a kind of chaos. Good point: almost all Japanese Forums are in here in one system. so you can find almost everything here. if you check here constantly, you can be Up-to-date. Bad point: it's system is so simple, every infomations are flat in timeline. you might feel it's a equivalent of IRC, actually some forums are dedicated for conversations. | Zero 1 | So I take it that you capture MPEG-2 broadcasts and encode them to H.264 + AAC in MP4. However when you say capture, do you mean by connecting a satellite receiver to an analog capture card, or do you have a satellite card where you can dump the MPEG-2 as it's streamed? Here in England we get digital TV through an antenna, so what I do is dump the MPEG-2 transport stream and use a Windows program called Project X to demux the transport stream (I think Project X might be able to be compiled for Mac). The video quality here is so bad. It's usually 2 to 3mbps MPEG-2 for 544x576, 704x576 or 720x576 25fps video. Not only is the rate too low for good quality, but since a lot of TV programs are from America, we get crappy conversions. I believe they tend to IVTC the 29.97fps NTSC stream (to give 23.976), then speed it up! This changes the audio's pitch too... Then they upscale the video, or leave big black borders. in Japan, Digital TV broadcasts are strictly protected by DRM. you have
to send personal informations to even watch it (In my opinion, JAPAN is
not North Korea :) . It's MPEG-2 TS @ 1080i (no 720p), fps is NTSC, up to 15Mbps or so. NOT enough. many people reports that they see block-noises. You can record TV shows to DRM-ready-Settopbox with harddisc. and MOVE - ONLY - ONCE to Special blank DVD disc. no copy, no back up, chance is only once, in case of error during MOVE, data will be lost. to see this DVD on windows, you need to buy DRM-ready softwares (no way for Mac^^;). usability is deteriorated. TV broadcasters seems too much precautious for P2P. some Windows users seems to use analog caputure cards. However, wide screen and noise-free is attractive, Digital TV and DRM-ready Settopboxes are Big Hit of the year. and analog TV broadcasts is due to end in 2011, there is a time. So, what I "capture" is ANALOG TV broadcasts, via MPEG-2 encoding box (there's only one choice on Mac). May be I could try MPlayer's TV grab options or something else, but the thing is drivers drivers drivers ;) My MPEG-2 encoding box can record TV Shows to Harddisc of my mac. max is 720x480@15Mbps(MPEG-2 PS), but usually I use 720x480@VBR9.5Mbps (max 15Mbps). with MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio. due to limitations of real-time MPEG-2 encoding, sometimes I see blocknoise in High-motions. and also analog noises. Hardware connections are like this: [antenna] - [MPEG-2 encoding box] - USB - [Mac(PowerPC )] and softwere chain to encode is: 0) Capty TV (for Recording MPEG-2 PS, bundle of encodingbox) 1) MPEGstreamclip(for CM edit, QuickTime-base) 2) MEncoder (for rawvideo.264. build from src, with x264. mpeg2 decoding seems to have some bug, can't drop delay-frames, can't handle PTS/DTS) 3) ffmpeg (for faac.mp4. from ffmpegX, little bit old one) 4) MP4box (mux. also from ffmpegX, little bit old one) Basic encoding settings are 640x480@1024kbps, 640x480 is from I only see those on Mac. 1024 is from that x264's main target bitrate seems around 1000kbps for VGA. I think my MP4's are not MP4 compliant. although VLC/MPlayer OSX/QuickTime Player 7 with avcDecoder 0.5.0 may decode them. MEncoder Document says never try PAL-DVD to NTSC fps conversion, they say just get original NTSC-DVD. so I think NTSC-PAL conversion is very hard work. I found some unique frames in 2006 worldcup football games in germany. may be that was a PAL-NTSC conversion. It was very strange. Sometimes they broadcast some BBC programs, next time I will try "capture". |

| Zero 1 | The other method I'm unsure about, I would have said they speed up the 29.97fps to 30fps and decimate to get 25fps, but a lot of the shows I've seen that seem to use this method are pure interlaced. It's horrible. Since it's so bad I just don't encode them. I mux the MPEG-2 video and MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio to MP4 using MP4box. Seeing as these files are spec compliant though, I suppose I could mux them to MPG or VOB and make a DVD. | も
